It works in uxterm: set LANG=C but LC_CTYPE to a valid utf-8 using
locale and it works fine.

Is there a paranoid check for the string type of LC_MESSAGES? Even then
it should not break it LC_CTYPE is set to a properl utf8 locale, like to
"C@utf-8" in BFs.
