Package: boot-floppies Version: 3.0.19-2002-02-07 Severity: important Installing the base system, when choosing the CD-ROM media, after the "insert CD" dialog message, the next dialog asks for the path to the archives. The string field is pre-filled with /instmnt. If you simply accept this "default" value, the next dialog says "The supplied directory /instmnt does not exist. Please enter a new one." and returns to the former dialog. The brouse button also declares /instmnt to be non-existant.
Removing the default value allows browsing the drive. Choosing dists/woody moves the process on to the dialog "Select Debian Archive Path" which provides two options: list and manually. Choosing "list" provides yet another dialog that says: Please select the directory that you will use to install the Base system from. The only selection option provided is /instmnt! If you accept this option, you get an important note suggesting boot floppies testers should use woody and not sid. Press continue and yet another dialog appears called "Select a Distribution", and offers testing and unstable. Choosing testing first looks for the Releases file, and then the Packages.gz file, which it then declares to be corrupt. Pressing <Continue> produces another dialog that says it is retrieving the Packages file. The five dialogs after "insert CD" are not needed, and only confuse the user. There is no reason why the install script can't find the required path and target items without any interrogation of the user. While I understand that things are still in the testing phase, why must the installation process support multiple distributions? Aren't we attempting to release Woody? I don't know at this point whether the reported corruption of the Packages.gz file is a true report, or a failure of the installer. The process seems to continue, however I get warning messages: adduser_3.45_all.deb was corrupt Followed by the error message: Couldn't download adduser. and then returns me to the main menu with the option "Install the Base System". That's all the information I have at this point. If there is anything I can trap or otherwise investigate, feel free to ask ... nicely please.
