Sorry, my explanation obviously wasn't clear enough. When you install Debian on most devices, you will get asked that question. This is because you interact with the installer before the network configuration is done. However, the QNAP installations are done via SSH (using what we call the network-console d-i image). In order to do an installation via SSH, the installer has to set up networking first. So we at least need to assign an IP address and set the gateway (if any). We *could* do the hostname later, after we set up an IP address and you log in via SSH. But as I mentioned in my last email, the current network configuration program doesn't allow for that. It does *all* network configuration in one step, including the hostname. By that time, you are not connected with SSH yet (we're just setting up the IP address) and so we cannot ask you about the hostname. Does that make sense now? I'm not sure how difficult it would be to run netcfg again after you connect with SSH and to show the hostname selection. Anyway, can you tell me if the installer took the hostname from DHCP? -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/
