Dear debootstrap maintainers, what do you want me to do? a) submit a patch which rips out of debootstrap all the devices.tar.gz stuff, or b) submit a patch which adds a second setup_devices() function which just runs mknod to be only used for jessie and newer releases.
While option a would remove a lot of complexity from the deboostrap source, it would prevent using debootstrap out of the box to install old releases on bare metal. OTOH I am quite that old releases cannot be installed on current hardware anyway, and anybody who cares enough to install an obsolete Debian release on obsolete hardware can use an obsolete version of debootstrap as well. So if I were the debootstrap maintainer I would choose option a and clean it up. -- ciao, Marco
