I'm also wondering: this will make all the corresponding translation bits out of date, thus disabling the translation here and there in the manual. I'm thus wondering who should work on updating them. It's not nice for translators to see a flurry of fuzzy entries just because of a CD -> CD-ROM update which could have been processed more or less automatically for all languages.
In most languages, CD-ROM has been kept as such, so it'd make sense to apply the same change in all those languages more or less automatically. A few others have translated the term, I guess we want the same standardization process there, possibly handled by translators themselves? The decision on which places should get the standard term is probably to be homogeneous across translations, though.
