What I do is to hack /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00CDMountPoint to read, Acquire::cdrom { mount "/media/usb"; } Dir::Media::MountPath "/media/usb"; where usb was cdrom. Then the the system looks for the installation media at the usb port.
