Package: installation-reports Severity: normal Dear Maintainer,
the installation was successful (great job!), I used LVM with encryption (I performed an installation on a different machine from the same USB stick with LVM and no encryption with the same result) and separate partitions for root, home, usr, var, tmp, and swap. I upgraded the chromebook with a 120GB SSD. With automatic partitioning the root partition is just a little over 300MB, which is fine for the installation, but this prevents me from installing a second kernel image, since the current kernels have modules in /lib (which is on the root partition) that use more than 130MB of space, and my root partition only has 90MB free after the installation. While 300MB seem to be ok for the /boot partition for several kernels and initrds, it is not sufficient for the root partition for the modules from a second or upgraded linux-image as distributed by Debian. -- Package-specific info: Boot method: USB stick Image version: Debian GNU/Linux testing _Jessie_ - Official Snapshot amd64 xfce-CD Binary-1 20140721-06:34 Date: Jul 29 2014 12:10 Machine: Acer C710 with Seabios Partitions: Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/bunny--vg-root ext4 321041 209226 90721 70% / udev devtmpfs 10240 0 10240 0% /dev tmpfs tmpfs 385184 29844 355340 8% /run tmpfs tmpfs 962960 0 962960 0% /dev/shm tmpfs tmpfs 962960 0 962960 0% /sys/fs/cgroup tmpfs tmpfs 102400 8 102392 1% /run/user tmpfs tmpfs 5120 4 5116 1% /run/lock /dev/mapper/bunny--vg-usr ext4 8516872 3642892 4418300 46% /usr /dev/mapper/bunny--vg-var ext4 2817056 766080 1888160 29% /var /dev/sda1 ext2 240972 30143 198388 14% /boot /dev/mapper/bunny--vg-home ext4 104522944 240112 98950252 1% /home /dev/mapper/bunny--vg-tmp ext4 368615 2441 342622 1% /tmp Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [O] Detect network card: [O] Configure network: [O] Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Clock/timezone setup: [O] User/password setup: [O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Install base system: [O] Install tasks: [O] Install boot loader: [O] Overall install: [O] Comments/Problems: I would prefer to have at least 1GB for the root partition, but the automatic partitioner does not let me increase the size. Also I would prefer if LVM would not assign the whole diskspace, I would like to leave some space empty (SSD overprovisioning?) and I think it is easier to grow a too small partition than shrinking a too big partition. When increase the RAM in this machine, I am afraid suspend/hibernation will not work anymore since the swap partition will then be smaller than the RAM size, so it would also be helpful to allow the user to pick a larger swap partition, or leave some disk space unused. I don't think the home partition needs to use all of the remaining space, it could start out much smaller. On the second machine that I installed from scratch, I redid the partitioning manually (after painfully deleting all partitions and volume groups by hand) and gave 1GB to the root partition. I could upgrade to the new 3.14-2 linux-image and the root partition is only used by 45%.
