I would assume the problem is deterministic and depends on the exact tree of file names which is given to genisoimage as input. If you have the opportunity to just exchange every occurence of genisoimage by xorriso -as mkisofs or, if a single word is needed, by its symbolic link alias xorrisofs then this might well be worth a try. It should work with xorriso-1.3.2 from sid, and most probably also with 1.2.2 from stable. debian-7.4.0-sparc-netinst.iso was built by xorriso-1.2.6, probably from http://www.gnu.org/software/xorriso/xorriso-1.2.6.tar.gz If you can point me to the code which controls the genisoimage run, then i will inspect it for problematic options.
