Indeed, reinstalling fails:

dpkg: error processing linux-image-3.12.6-rpi+_2014010201_armhf.deb (--install):
 unable to make backup link of `./boot/vmlinuz-3.12.6-rpi+' before installing 
new version: Operation not permitted
