Thanks, Andreas. I therefore clone this bug report and assign it to debian-installer itself, so that the needed actions are ataken on time there, too, if we want this feature. I was already suspecting that having Cyril Brulebois (CC'ed) look specifically at all this is really needed as this feature is indeed quite invasive. So, well, let's get his input. I have the feeling that, given the time you invested in this, we should have some cinfidence that your proposal both makes sense....and will not break D-I.....but someone less optimistic and confident than me might want to have a closer look...:-)
