To minimize the risk for breakage while still getting the largest part of the speed increase, I'd suggest to backport just these two patches: * Set blocksize to 512k * Allocate buffer from heap instead of stack (Actually, the heap-instead-of-stack patch isn't even necessary, if it can be guaranteed that the stack size is larger than ~600k on all supported architectures.)
