The Debian Lenny Net Install CD and the Lenny LiveCD will not run on a
PC containing an AMD-K6 CPU. I can only guess there are millions out
there, and why nobody has posted this problem anywhere is a mystery.
The AMD K6 is a i586-class CPU, two architecture steps newer than the
i386 specified above.
The Lenny Net Install comes to a halt right after the keyboard selection
process, and after it has checked USB, etc. Then in about two minutes,
both the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock start flashing at ~120 FPM. The PC
then requires a hard reset.
The Lenny LiveCD gives this clue in an error message when it stops
functioning:
This kernel requires the following features not present in the CPU:
cmov
Unable to boot - Please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

the cmov is an instruction introduced into the i686 class CPU.
There seems to be several problems listed on this Google page involving
the choice to use cmov, but none of the information pertains to actually
booting a Debian Lenny installation or LiveCD.
Both of these Lenny CDs do work as they should on Pentium Pro and newer
PCs, but what is someone to do who has over 20 older PCs with AMD-K6 and
older, Cyrex, and Pentium "One" CPUs?
I do not have the time nor resources to compile a special kernel, which,
by the way, could be lost when replaced at a later update/upgrade. Nor
can I create an installation CD for my 20 i586 class computers, which
need to be upgraded from Sarge, to a later GNU/Linux that is presently
supported.
Is there an alternate Debian Lenny image that has a kernel compiled for
i586 or older, and will it be supported in the future?
As a side note, Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron LTS Server Edition works fine.
It has a five-year support schedule which probably surpasses Debian's
support, and it does not load a bunch of GUI programs. Maybe I would be
better off using Hardy instead of Lenny?
Finally, please reply directly back to me via e-mail or provide a link
where I can find any forum reply. I have an enormous amount of trouble
trying to find anything on a Debian Website, and may miss any reply
without a link.

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.
I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are (very) old, between 2.5 and >4 years (so thats 2 releases ago).
If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.
