Looks like it was because of this, from the USB stick I was using,
with messages from syslog:

Apr  4 22:28:38 kernel: [  101.522661] FAT-fs (sda5): utf8 is not a recommended 
IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!


When I installed from a CD, this problem went away, and the kernel was
properly installed.
