Hi Paul, you said > Grub install failed: > - proposes to install on first hard drive (as always) > - but first hard drive was the USB stick > - install failed, USB stick not damaged (whew) > - post installation: > - regenerated device map and reinstalled grub bootloader > > Is there a good point during the install to remove the USB stick > to ensure the real disk is detected as the first hard drive ?
and then closed the bug since the installation was successful overall. I have a question for the list - why should this be considered a success? Isn't the correct behaviour for grub-install to - propose to install on disk drive other than the install medium (there may be cases where this isn't right) or else - propose to install on first hard drive - but then allow user to select another drive for the install or else - list all drives it detects - ask the user to mark any removable drives (so they will be ignored when compiling the device map) - propose to install to the first of the remaining drives - but then allow user to select another of the remaining drives for the install Can you clarify a point for me also - when the installer sets up the / partition in /etc/fstab, does it set it up to mount by UUID, or as device /dev/sda1? Perhaps I've misunderstood something here but it seems like there are still issues with grub-install that would be quite significant for users less expert than yourself.
