Two methods to choose from to get round this.

1. Once you've done language and keyboard (or before, if you wish):

        mount -tvfat /dev/sdXn /media

   sdXn being the second partition on the stick. 'ls -l /dev/sd*' might
   be of help to identify it. 

2. As before but instead do

        mkdir /lib/firmware

   and copy the loose firmware files (not the .debs) to this directory.

I cannot remember if a 'umount /media' is desirable afterwards so that
D-I doesn't get in a tizzy.
