The toggling of a "switch default desktop task to xfce" commit in the Git repo is somewhat confusing: http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=tasksel/tasksel.git // Since the GNOME project changed its goals to interface simplification // targeted for touchscreens / tablet PCs, which resulted in reducing of GUI // customization features & average usability, I support the transition // from GNOME 3 to anything else (not sure about KDE 4). // // The last haven in GNOME 3 for GNOME 2 ex-users was the "classic / fallback" // mode, which is going to be removed in the near future: // GNOME 3.8 to drop fallback mode -- https://lwn.net/Articles/523774/ // // IMHO, GNOME 3 is not so stable & usable // (as GNOME 2 was; not sure about its fork called MATE), // therefore it doesn't fit well in Debian; // the monstrosity of GNOME 3 as a Debian Wheezy default desktop // on the new installation & upgrades (from Squeeze's GNOME 2) // will result in a significant amount of user dissatisfaction & complaints. // // BTW, as for now, I use LXDE, but Xfce is still better than GNOME 3 ;) -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages task-desktop depends on: ii desktop-base 7.0.3 ii menu 2.1.46 ii tasksel 3.14 ii xorg 1:7.7+1 ii xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.7+1 ii xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.7+1 Versions of packages task-desktop recommends: ii alsa-base 1.0.25+2+nmu2 ii alsa-utils 1.0.25-3 ii anacron 2.3-19 ii avahi-daemon 0.6.31-1 ii eject 2.1.5+deb1+cvs20081104-11 ii libgl1-mesa-dri 8.0.4-2 ii libnss-mdns 0.10-3.2 ii pm-utils 1.4.1-9 ii task-lxde-desktop 3.14 ii xdg-utils 1.1.0~rc1+git20111210-6 task-desktop suggests no packages. -- no debconf information

So, it should be obvious that wheezy will have GNOME as default. There is no bug here....
