I think that the dependencies need to remain circular, and as tasksel has no maintainer scripts, it avoids the well-known problems with circular dependencies. apt-get install task-desktop should install a usable desktop environment, not just an X server (with no display manager even) and a web browser apt-get install task-foo-desktop should install an X server. -- see shy jo
