Using a Sil 3114 Sata raid controller you are only able to boot sucessfully in 
rescue mode.

AFAIK, rescue mode mounts filesystems as ext2 (note so self, with this BR i see 
why) that should be the only difference from booting the standard installer.

On linux-2.6 i found this bug report which seems to be the same problem you 
are facing:
#565797 - linux-image-2.6.26-2-686: EXT3-fs error on sata SiI 3114 controller

The bads news, seems it is not solved, and can happen also on buggy hardware.
