Both my wired and wireless network card were detect during the installation
process, but none of
them were working. As a consequence, I couldn't configure apt at the
installation process and
was only able to install the base system. Having done that, with the base
system already
installed, both my wired and wireless cards were working and only then I could
apt the rest of
the system. Now I have a fully working Debian system, and I was pretty amazed
that, except for
that minor trick, everything else was automatically detected and working.
I still have one observation. This machine described below is brand new, and
before I installed
Debian 'Squeeze' on it I tried to install the stable release, 'Lenny'. On
'Lenny' I had the same
problem I just described above: both my network cards weren't working during
the installation
process, and I had to install the base system only.
But in 'Lenny' my network cards didn't work even after the installation, which
left me a basic
installation without internet. I should confess now that I am not fully
familiar with Debian, and
not knowing what to do to install the rest of the system, I was about to
compile the needed
drivers for my network cards by hand. Then, I had a shock: the base system
didn't come with
'make' or even 'gcc', and that would make my task of compiling the drivers sort
of a hell.
I didn't even try. I quit with 'Lenny' and tried 'Squeeze' and, luckly, that
just solved the
problem. Still, if that hadn't work, I would quit Debian and tried another
distribution,
given that 'Squeeze' too didn't come with any compiling tools in order to
correct by hand that
sort of little problems that occur very often in any installation process.
My point is: I really think that any base system should have a minimum set of
compiling tools,
at least 'gcc' and 'make', in order to the 'not-so-advanced' users have a
chance to solve the
sort of problem listed above.

Closing as it's an installation report.
Feel free to test and report any issues against the current debian
installer release (Squeeze Beta2) which supports more hardware and also
allows to load external firmware if needed/wanted.
