Comments/Problems:
Hello,
I'm the local system administrator at Server4You Inc.
We are a company that rents low budget servers to a wide range of clients here
in the US and Germany.
You may want to check out http://www.server4you.com, http://www.server4you.de,
http://www.plusserver.de.
Well, thats us.
The installations are done fully automatically, so far we are offering Redhat
9, Fedora Core 1&2,
Whitebox Linux, Windows Server 2003, and Gentoo. Our focus lies on fully
unattended installations.
I'm working on the Debian Installation at the moment, and I did some test runs
with the current Version
(pre-rc2).
Usually all the installation templates are stored in our database. The Redhat
anaconda installer
is capable of grabbing the kickstart config, as well as the Debian installer
does fetch the
preseed config.
Although it looks really promising, I have a few comments to make:
1)
# To preseed the root password, you have to put it in the clear in this
# file. That is not a very good idea, use caution!
# (XXX: In fact, this won't work, because passwd clears the settings
# before asking for a root password. This may not be fixed before the sarge
# release, if it's fixed at all.)
#passwd passwd/root-password password r00tme
#passwd passwd/root-password-again password r00tme
This is something we really need to work. Maybe there are more people who need
to
set the preseed the root password. How are my chances for this to change?
2)
#### Network configuration.
d-i netcfg/choose_interface select eth0
d-i netcfg/use_dhcp boolean boolean false
d-i netcfg/disable_dhcp boolean true
d-i netcfg/get_nameservers string 69.64.44.50
d-i netcfg/get_ipaddress string 69.64.44.39
d-i netcfg/get_netmask string 255.255.255.0
d-i netcfg/get_gateway string 69.64.44.1
d-i netcfg/confirm_static boolean true
Naturally the server gets its ip via dhcp. But I would like to change the
network
configuration to a static IP. Above is my futile attempt to make that happen.
But then it's already documented, that setting the IP won't work, if the server
got
booted via network.
Under anaconda we also boot via dhcp, and change the IP to a static IP using the
kickstart template.
Any chances that this is going to change? I mean, I can work around it by
echoing the
network config into the appropriate scripts. The only thing I want to
accomplish is that
in the end, the server is set up with a static IP.
3)
There are 2 packages that keep asking for things, like if I want to install
some libs
without maildir support.
Is there any way to suppress that?
Well, that's basically it. Basically point 1) and 3) are keeping me from using
it today.
Of course you won't change anything because of me or us, but I'm hoping that
you got
more requests for those things already, and maybe some day... :-)
That's it, thanks for your time, down below the lshw for a detailed computer
description.
Cheers
Sascha

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful
The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.
In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.
You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.
If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.
Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
