Sure. It is not that hard, but quite some technical knowledge is assumed to get started without help. Read on. > Some people already pointed me in some directions, but I'm not sure how to > start. > > - do I need an account on debian.org's CVS server? Not for read-only access (that's what I use). First, install the package boot-floppies. This ensures that you have the required helper tools to build the pdf and html versions of your translations for testing. To get the latest CVS-tree (around 13MB) execute the following commands: export CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/debian-boot cvs login # (Just press enter when asked for a password) cvs co boot-floppies The subdirectory "boot-floppies" will be created in the current directory. In this directory, you will find the latest CVS-tree of boot-floppies. Later updates can be done just by doing: cvs update from inside the boot-floppies directory. Read the README-Translators. It suggest that you start out translating dbootstrap (the messages and dialogs seen during the actual installation). I highly recommend kbabel for this task. If you want to *just* translate the manual, skip to point 5) in README-Translators. It refers to files in the "boot-floppies/documentation" directory. Do cp install.sgml install.nl.sgml and translate everything but the tags in it. If in doubt, look at a translation, in a language familiar to you. If you did not translate dbootstrap, you have to change this line In Makefile.docs : buildable-langs := $(filter-out eo gl hu it sv tr, $(langs)) to buildable-langs := $(filter-out eo gl hu it sv tr, $(langs) nl) Read the README-authors for easy instructions on how to produce pdf and html versions of your work ("make all-lang-docs"). Now you only translated the front page. To translate the full manual do (in /documentation): cvs update # to get in sync with possible updates in the CVS tree mkdir nl cp en/welcome.sgml nl translate nl/welcome.sgml and change the reference in install.nl.sgml to "en/welcome.sgml" to "nl/welcome.sgml". Check the translation with "make all-lang-docs" Repeat for the rest of en/*.sgml I hope this will get you started (and that other newcomers on the list may find it helpful. You wil need to change the Dutch "nl"-abbreviations with that of your own language) Sincerely Claus -- Claus Hindsgaul [EMAIL PROTECTED] (PGP-nøgle: http://www.image.dk/~claus_h/PGP.htm ) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
