On Friday, I had the opportunity to reinstall Debian (sid) on another machine. I thus used the daily image of the debian installer and it failed in exactly the same manner as described in the present bug report. I was only able to get a working system by installing "testing" using the debian-installer and then performing an "apt-get dist-upgrade" to "unstable". The bug, therefore, is that the debian-installer proposes to install stable, testing or unstable but does (did) not work with the unstable version of grub-pc.
