So I bisected those images and found that libnewt is the problem. This puzzled me because libnewt didn't change a lot during that time (but there was a major new upstream just a few weeks before then); but then I asked Joey (who runs the armel dailies) whether the system might have been out of date and he confirmed that libnewt0.52 0.52.2-11.3 was installed when the 20090501 daily (that works) was built. So libnewt0.52 0.52.2-11.3 worked, and 0.52.10-1 introduced that regression.
