I had an Adaptec 29160N attached to the original system. On a hunch, I removed it.
The debian 5.0 system that previously would not boot, then boot without problem! It still gave the error message: "ACPI:Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0" but it was non-fatal and the system went on to boot!
