Comments/Problems:

Installation proceeded without any apparent problems. Machine was not
connected to a network during install.

During boot of the installed system, two problems occurred:

1) The screen would blank after the message

"Saving VESA State...Allocated buffer at 0x2010 (base is 0x0) ES: 0x0201 EBX
0x0000"

Pressing C-Alt-Del produces a message:

"vbesave exited outside the normal code flow"

Note that the machine has a WXGA screen.

Boot options like noapic, nolapic, acpi=off, vga=normal, vga=792, etc
have no effect.

Based on a post on the net, I edited /etc/init.d/vbesave and returned
a "log_end_msg 1" and an "exit 1" just before it runs vbetool vbesave.
This prevents the hang.

However, now the screen will do dead whenever it tries to change into
video mode. Using vga=... and/or noapic nolapic will get through the boot
until it apparently wants to boot into X.

Based on web sources, I renamed /etc/rc2.d/S30gdm to K70gdm which
allows me to get the text login screen. But the screens goes dead on
a "startx".

I looked for /usr/share/hal/fdi/information to try to turn off using
saved VESA states using some quirk, but the directory does not exist.

2) It would lose the disk with the boot medium on it, being a 250 GB
7200 rpm hard drive

However, during boot it produced a message

"IRQ 10: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option)

When irqpoll was added to the boot command, the problem disappeared;
it then remounted the disk without problems.

Therefor problem 2 is solved. In particular, the machine seems to
work fine in text mode, and will even mount a USB stick, as the
"df -Tl" above shows under /a.

The solution of the second problem had no effect either way on the first
problem. The screen goes dead on entering graphics mode.

Some boot error messages that seem like they might be of interest:

"ACPI: Invalid PBLK length [8]"

"mmc0: unknown controller version [2]. You may experience problems."
