This is the "use persistent names" release goals for the installer: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SqueezeGoals There is a general agreement this is a wished feature, yes. It "just" needs people to care enough and make this happen..:-)... Colin Watson is trying to coordinate efforts to achieve this.
