Package: debian-installer Version: lenny Severity: important
-- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash For a lenny install of Debian, gnome-audio was not installed, after manualy installing gnome-audio, "System Sounds" from menu "System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sounds tab -> "Enable software sound mixing (ESD)" and "Play system sounds" are both enabled, however selecting the "Play" button for any of the system sounds does not produce any sound. If I install other packages like esound and libesd-alsa0, then I can get sound to work, but this affects the working of sound for other systems just as sun-java package. I believe that not all the required packages to support sound are being installed (just as gnome-audio is not installed during the debian (lenny) installation. This issue also occurred in Debian etch 4.0 r6 but the behavour after installing libesd-alsa0 was slightly different. If this issue is not with a required package not being installed, then it may be with a faulty sound module ? Below is output from "aptitude show esound" clients and common. aptitude show esound Package: esound State: not installed Version: 0.2.36-3 Priority: optional Section: sound Maintainer: Ryan Murray <rmur...@debian.org> Uncompressed Size: 49.2k Depends: libaudiofile0 (>= 0.2.3-4), libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libesd0 (>= 0.2.35) | libesd-alsa0 (>= 0.2.35), libwrap0, esound-common (>= 0.2.36-3) Provided by: pulseaudio-esound-compat Description: Enlightened Sound Daemon - Support binaries This program is designed to mix together several digitized audio streams for playback by a single device. gkirk...@tuxpc11:~$ aptitude show esound-clients Package: esound-clients State: not installed Version: 0.2.36-3 Priority: optional Section: sound Maintainer: Ryan Murray <rmur...@debian.org> Uncompressed Size: 127k Depends: libaudiofile0 (>= 0.2.3-4), libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libesd0 (>= 0.2.35) | libesd-alsa0 (>= 0.2.35), esound-common (>= 0.2.36-3) Conflicts: libesd0 (< 0.2.36-1), libesd-alsa0 (< 0.2.36-1) Description: Enlightened Sound Daemon - clients Utilities that control and interact with the Enlightened Sound Daemon. gkirk...@tuxpc11:~$ aptitude show esound-common Package: esound-common State: installed Automatically installed: yes Version: 0.2.36-3 Priority: optional Section: sound Maintainer: Ryan Murray <rmur...@debian.org> Uncompressed Size: 69.6k Description: Enlightened Sound Daemon - Common files This program is designed to mix together several digitized audio streams for playback by a single device.
