When installing debian to a 1GB USB key using
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/InstallOnSDcardOrUsbStick , a lack of
space on the disk caused the installer to go into a near-perpetual loop, with
no option for aborting or otherwise recovering

This message is repeated contiuously. Some method of stopping the installation
is requested. As a new debian user, I was expecting individual package
customisation, and as such did not worry about oversize installs until too late.

There is not all that much the installer can do about this. Especially
since it has no way to determine exactly in advance how much diskspace
will be needed and on which file systems.
The installation guide lists the disk space needed for tasks and tasksel
checks the disk space available before marking the desktop task as
installable by default. The rest is up to the user.
