Reading the help offered by the install process, plus
a search on the internet, plus some experimentation helped
me discover the following workaround:

Adding either of the "noapic" or "acpi=off" options seems
to solve the problem.

  I suspect noapic is preferable since it is mentioned
in the help notes (although not by itself).
  It would be good to have this problem (and its workaround)
documented, and an explanation given about what is happening,
and what the option means.
