Can you also try:
   install noapic
   install noapic nolapic
   install acpi=noirq
   install noacpi

Note that all of these are workarounds, not real solutions. But they will 
help identify in which area the problem is.

Please also try a Lenny beta2 installation image [1] which uses a 
different kernel version, even if only to see if the problem is specific 
to the 2.6.18 kernel that Etch uses.
To see the kernel boot messages with these images, you need to select 
the "Expert mode" boot option in the "Advanced options" menu. The 
parameters can be added after pressing tab.
