Sounds like /etc/modutils/arch/i386 is missing, that includes the
needed alias:

        alias parport_lowlevel parport_rpc

modutils definitely handles that correctly; when you run update-modules
it generates /etc/modules.conf and that will include the setup for
your architecture.
