Re: automating mass installs there are a number of projects to do exactly
this, most notably FAI.  It'd be wise to take a look at these as they all
suggest different solutions to the same problems:

Using debconf's persistence would be great, but I'd like to store the db
anywhere I like - on a bootfloppy, customised install CD, nfs/ftp server etc.
and hence choose whatever method I prefer to perform mass installs.
