Well it seems that the install process is not the problem...  I setup
another drive on the symbios card and installed debian, then compiled a
new kernel for drivers for the RAID controller and created the
filesystem from there and got the same problem.  It took forever to
create the filesystems.  I looked in /var/log at syslog, messages,
kern.log, etc and found no error reporting.  This really puzzels me that
this could be happening on just debian seeing as this is a kernel level
driver.  I guess my next step is to install this card in another machine
and see what happens there.  I'm not for sure what else to try.  Maybe I
will try another dist just to see if it will work that way we can
definitly say if this is a debian only problem or not.  Anyway, I will
keep you updated on my progress.  Thanks.
