Hi Martin, (I add debian-arm on cc: that any responses can be found by anybody on the net)
I am using my nslu2 running etch as my primary network router running from a 2 GB USB flash stick. I wanted for a long time to get more redundancy in the setup. For that purpose, I want to have my second nslu2 configured as a spare box which would physically replace the first one, if the first nslu2 would break. Also I want to have a copy of the first USB flash stick (probably much more likely to break than the nslu2 itself) and replace the USB flash stick in case it breaks with a backup stick. The first question is related to the backup copy of my usb stick: - my backup stick is only 1 GB whereas my regular one is 2 GB. I created the same partitions on the backup stick and copied all files (using cp -ra). The nslu2 rejects to boot from the backup stick, I see no entries in the syslog. Any idea why this does not work? If a stick with the same size would make things a lot easier though, I would buy a second 2 GB stick... Partition table of the primary stick: Disk /dev/sdb: 2079 MB, 2079850496 bytes 17 heads, 32 sectors/track, 7467 cylinders Units = cylinders of 544 * 512 = 278528 bytes Disk identifier: 0xc3072e18 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 462 7467 1905632 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 1 461 125376 82 Linux swap / Solaris Partition table entries are not in disk order The partion table of my backup stick: blackbox:~# fdisk /dev/sdb Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sdb: 1031 MB, 1031306752 bytes 32 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1015 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1984 * 512 = 1015808 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 64 1015 944384 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 1 63 62465 82 Linux swap / Solaris Partition table entries are not in disk order My second question is related to the spare nslu2: - I was running on my spare nslu2 some time ago Debian etch as well (prerelease probably). Judging from the syslog it boots but it is looking for kernel modules 2.6.18-3 for the ixp4xx ethernet driver which are not on my flash stick anymore. I am tempted to add an init script (at the end of the init process) which does a "dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.18-6-ixp4xx" Would that work (or is there a better way to achieve my goal)?
