Despite my repeated requests, crosstool-ng-1.0 insisted on building gcc-4.2.2. So I built my own gcc-4.1.1, used that to build the _same_ kernel, and the box is now solid. Go figure.
If I had more hours in the day, I'd investigate further. At the moment, I have leave it as it is now...
