Woohoo! It worked!
Before shutting it down to reseat the battery, i removed the rtc-dev
module, which let me have a clean, quick shutdown with no hanging.
After shutdown, i cracked the case, unseated the battery, and waited 5
minutes. Then put the battery back in, and it booted in about a
minute.
Vast improvement over ~1 hour! Thanks again for the pointer, Gordon.
