An upgrade to a modern kernel is available now for people who have installed Debian on their NSLU2 using debian-installer beta 2. The following does not apply to users of DebianSlug (the manual debootstrap method) but only to those who used debian-installer as described at http://cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/ Please also note that this is only for people who want to upgrade from an existing system installed with debian-installer beta 2 to a modern kernel - people who want to install a fresh Debian have to wait about one more week until we release release candidate 1 of debian-installer.
The reason why a manual upgrade is necessary is described on the upgrade page but in short: we've made some major changes to allow kernels larger than 1 MB (a limitation NSLU2's RedBoot has) and this requires you to flash a new image. Since no data is stored in flash when you use Debian, this is not a problem. The actual instructions are available at: http://cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/upgrade.html If you follow these instructions, your NSLU2 will boot into a new 2.6.17 kernel with the flash layout that allows us to have larger kernels than 1 MB and this in turn allows us to share one kernel with other IXP4xx boards. I am now working on 2.6.18 and will integrate the open source Ethernet driver. If you have any problems with this upgrade process, please post to the mailing list and I will try to help. -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
