What on earth is this?
Note: if this is solved, you won't be able to build illuminator anyway
because of an old ICE that bit one of its dependencies. Rebuild and
install petsc (specifically petsc2.1.5-dev and petsc2.1.5) and
illuminator will build -- almost, failing as above.
