I haven't tested shared hot spares myself but this article (among quite a few other hits from google: shared hot spare) indicates that it is quite possible with mdadm running in daemon mode: http://www.redhat.com/magazine/021jul06/departments/tips_tricks/ ...and it appears Len was completely right about the spare-group keyword.
