Since I apparently have the same problem it might be useful to say I also saw this problem after trying to upgrade to 2.6.16.28. 2.6.16.24 works fine, it was compiled on a Tyan Tiger K8SSA (S3870G2NR) running etch on 2006-07-15. The timestamp of the 2.6.16.28 kernel is 2006-09-13, maybe some change in etch causes my problems... -- When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
