I had the exact same problem some time ago. It was a bug in kernel 2.6.8 and 2.6.9. As I see it, there are 2 solutions. Either use a custom kernel with the libata SATA drivers disabled and use the old depreciated ide-sata driver. Or you can use kernel 2.6.10 or above.
