After playing around it eventually started reading the user name at the
login, and I was able to get in. It was definitely Gnome desktop. I
decided to reinstall. Thanks.

Hi,
It sounds like you somehow managed to install gnome by mastake.
Pressing CTRL+Shift+T to bring up the terminal amd do the following
sudo apt install task-mate-desktop. It is also possible that gdm
might be loading at login in which case you can just press enter to
bring up the password field and you should be able to login from there.

I used the debian-12.9.0-amd64-netinst.iso installer and type 's' at
the
prompt. The talking installe worked fine. After I reboot the
system I hear
'screen reader on, 11 button greyed'.
That's odd, it's not what I get.
I can't use ORCA at that point, in other words the ORCA commands don't
work.
They work for me.
By default the installer has option 1, Debian Desktop, 7 Mate,
and probably 12 utilities.
Yes, that is expected.
I picked the same options, adding SSH server.
Perhaps you made a typo? Which made it select something else than the
mate desktop. I tried with "1 7 11 12" and it went fine for me.
My question is what does
Debian Desktop mean, is that a Gnome Desktop, and should I not pick
that?
No, "Debian Desktop" is just the usual desktop tools, not necessarily
Gnome, and the installer selects mate as environment desktop by default.
I don't remember having this problem with the 12.5 installer. I
guess if nobody knows an easy fix, an can reinstall, but who knows if
it will work?
It worked for me at least.
