Choppy speech when using espeak and espeakup on a Raspberry Pi

Hello,

First, sorry if this is not the right place to ask this, please direct 
me there if that's not the case. Also, please CC me on your replies if 
you don't mind (I will check the archives regardless).

I am running espeakup on a Raspberry Pi 4B runningrunning bullseye (the 
lite version with no desktop). I am experiencing choppy speech when 
running espeakup and also when running espeak on its own, but not when 
generating wave files and playing them with aplay. Sadly I don't have 
any more information, but if you want me to test anything, please 
provide steps and I will gladly follow them.
