I survived it. It's a strange place using busybox with ash.
Good news, on first boot, I have speech in all the consoles! Then I
installed caja-open-terminal and rebooted, and guess what?
Bad News, on 2nd boot, I have no speech in any console except the log
in console for Mate. Boo! Bah! Humbug!
Logging into Mate still has the same problem, if I have selected
"default" I go into a loop, if I select "Mate" I can log in
successfully.
