See #910227 for the initial report: on HiDPI screens, the native resolution makes text extremely tiny, unreadable. The solution in the debian installer was to set gfxpayload=keep to use a 800x600 resolution. But unfortunately this is not enough for submenus which reset this parameter, and thus advanced and dark-theme boots still have the issue. debian-cd thus also has to include this in the submenus for it to work. I'll commit a patch.
