I don't know if the installer is usable on real hardware, 40 MB is a lot
a of memory for this kind of machine.
My Mac Centris 650 has 136 MiB of RAM. So that shouldn't be a problem ;).
debian-installer also has low-mem mode which I have successfully used
on my Amiga 1200 in the past.
