Any chance you connected the wide disk through a wide/narrow adapter
to the narrow connector of a _wide_ SCSI card? In that case, the SCSI
chip still sees a wide disk, while the data path is narrow.
That might well have been the case - so if the card can't do wide we
should be safe?
