OK. I see now that the code uses the lowest 2 bits for other purposes. This isn't easy to see from the code, and the comment that says that is actually hidden along with the type definition of futex_key inside the header file. My apologies for responding to the other email before reading this one. Is there a document somewhere on how all of this works, or is it just the comments scattered about all the code? The man page for the system call isn't really enough to explain the implementation.
