Upon continuing a dist-upgrade I had killed earlier, I get funny errors
on the G4 - a package name missing in /var/lib/dpkg/update/, a perl
script failing to compile... once that happens, I can even trigger the tar
error as you described. So it looks like you need to exercise the buffer
cache somewhat before the error triggers. I'll try to force this by
exhaustively calculating md5sums over all files now.
