I think this wont be recognized by a standard kernel.

Not supported at all. I heared NetBSD in ancient times had support for it.
Everything else should work. I never heared of "devices too slow to be
recognized".
My two cent: Install 3.0 and upgrade it. This works much better and
gives mostly the same result.
